CEP Moves Hosts

For anyone who noticed the wiki and forums were down for a few hours yesterday, here’s why!

Server Is Fine Burn GIF - Server Is Fine Burn Fire - Discover & Share GIFs

I’ve been hosting the wiki on DigitalOcean because it claimed a “free” plan for all static sites. With a lot of the late 2025 changes however I began seeing my bill go up dramatically, starting at $30 a month and ending at January at $67 a month. I had spent all of November/December trying to improve compile times for the wiki because Digitalocean claimed long periods of the compiles were ‘billable’, but no the billing was still $0- the actual cost was coming from bandwidth limits imposed on the sites. I was going to begin finding other solutions, but then a few days ago DigitalOcean then claimed the 20gb source + hosted files exceeded the limit of the storage.

So uh yeah thats stupid. The site has now been moved to a VPS where its sole job is hosting the files and not compiling. I attempted to get auto-compiling set up but it claimed it would take 3 hours at the rates I was paying (and again I don’t want to be paying much).

So, for everyone to note here, the wiki going forward will not have changes fully committed until I am able to personally compile it at home and throw it on the VPS. My compile time is around 10 minutes, but I work a lot and you must expect the wiki might not update at all some days.

There is one improvement to this arrangement however, and that is the VPS can send over most files as compressed now- including the beefy search engine each time it updates. I had already made some compressions in the engine a few days before this changeover, and now the total files went from 60mb to just 8mb (and also I removed a dumb debug message I left in that tried displaying all terms in the console). Actual load times will probably still only be visible in articles and the search however, as AVIF photos cannot really be compressed further.

Also, if you noticed the wiki acting strange yesterday after coming back online on the VPS, all of those issues should be resolved by now. Reply if you notice any other ones.

So, I’m taking that I shouldn’t push anything going forward?
